EDGE, MFE & ALD - 2008-09

In 2008-09, the Ohio FFA Association will offer three distinctly different leadership conferences for its members. All three conferences will be held concurently at two Columbus area hotels. The EDGE Conference is for 8th grade students, the MFE Conference is for 9th & 10th grade students and the ALD Conference is for 11th & 12th grade students.

  • November 15-16, 2008, Doubtree Hotel, Columbus/Worthington
  • January 10-11, 2009, Crowne Plaza Hotel Columbus North

Experiencing Discovery, Growth & Excellence (EDGE) is the 1st component of the National FFA Leadership and Personal Growth Series. It is designed to help all middle school students better understand who they are and where they are heading. The program encourages each participant to interact and to explore his or her common interests with others. Through this process, the student will learn what makes her and all others unique. They will also gain an understanding of how best to serve their home, school and civic communities.

The EDGE Conference:

  • Distinguishes between factors that result in self-identity versus factors that result in confidence.
  • Describes an interaction between self-knowledge and personal growth.
  • Assesses personal interests using an interests inventory.
  • Describes an interaction between relationships, respect and decision making.
  • Evaluates possible outcomes from taking a personal risk.
  • Evaluates future FFA involvement based upon information gathered during the conference.

Made For Excellence (MFE). This cornerstone conference for personal growth is better than ever. Focused on freshmen and sophomores, MFE is designed to meet these students where they are — thinking about plans for the future, understanding themselves and considering choices ahead. With a thoughtful mix of activities, large and small group interaction, direct instruction and personal reflection, MFE is engaging and meaningful for FFA members.

The MFE Conference:

  • Students will understand that they are made for excellence, not mediocrity
  • Students will learn that excellence is comprised of personal choices
  • Students will discover their own talents by completing a talent assessment relating the results to their talents and describing how to utilize them
  • Students will identify skills needed and desired for success and determine sources and methods to gain those skills
  • Students will determine their will by assessing personal interests and explaining the components of motivation
  • Students will describe success as excellence meeting opportunity
  • Students will set goals for success
  • Students will identify choices needed to utilize available opportunities within FFA, high school, careers, and other organizations

Advanced Leadership Development (ALD). Leadership is influence. ALD introduces FFA members to this concept in a real-life and purposeful way. Students will work in small groups to solve challenges, have discussions and plan for the success of their local FFA chapter as they learn about team building, problem solving and service to others. This conference will develop better leaders that build stronger FFA chapters.

The ALD Conference:

  • Define leadership as influence
  • Distinguish current versus non-current perspectives of leadership.
  • Use a process to identify the cause of a need for leadership.
  • Evaluate the alignment of organizational mission and their personal purpose.
  • Identify the role of leadership as a personal choice.
  • Identify team leadership as shared purpose.
  • List strategies for building teams and utilizing talents.
  • Evaluate the role of team leadership and address needs for leadership.
  • List the steps in solving a problem in service to others.
  • Create a solution, using a brainstorming plan method, for an identified problem in a local FFA chapter.
  • List opportunities to influence through service.
  • Identify two barriers and two benefits of the act of leadership.
